Laker Layups

This is a very simple drill, but the focus is all in the details. Run this at the end of practice when players are tired and focus tends to slip. Every pass, catch, rebound, and finish must be clean. If there is any mistake, the entire team starts over. This drill reinforces concentration, communication, and finishing under fatigue.
Phase 1

  1. Players form two lines at half court, just like a normal layup line.
  1. The inbounder passes to the player cutting outside the paint. The player catches and goes straight up for the layup with no dribble.
Phase 2

  1. After the layup, the shooter goes to the back of the rebounding line, and the rebounder becomes the new inbounder.
Phase 3

  1. Once the whole group makes all their layups in a row without a miss, switch immediately to the other side.
Phase 4

The key to this drill is details. If any of these mistakes happen, you restart the drill from the beginning.
  • The pass goes inside the paint
  • The player dribbles
  • The inbounder doesn't call the name of the receiver before the making the pass
  • The layup is missed
  • The rebounder lets the ball hit the floor
  • Any other mistake or lack of focus
