Hedge defense has long been a cornerstone of screen coverage, especially against offenses that lack strong floor spacing and shooting. By applying immediate pressure on the ball handler, Hedge forces them to either give up the ball early or struggle to initiate the offense effectively, disrupting the flow of the opposing team’s attack.
When the screen is set, defender #5 immediately puts pressure on the ball handling player, not allowing them to get over the screen easily and uniterrupted.
A short roll occurs when the screener rolls to a position closer to the ball handler, typically around the nail area, rather than rolling all the way to the rim.
This provides the ball handler with an easy passing option and keeps the offense flowing.
#4 sets a RAM screen on our designated screener #5.
We want to delay the screener’s defender to give the ball handler an opportunity to "split" between the on-ball defender and the screener’s defender.
