Pacers Transition Offense Drill

This drill focuses on the concepts and details behind how the Indiana Pacers run their transition offense under Rick Carlisle.
The setup is simple. It’s a 5-on-5 transition drill with a 16-second shot clock. Teams push the ball, look for an early scoring chance, and if nothing is there, they flow straight into their early or motion offense.
The goal is to teach players to play fast, create outnumber situations, recognize advantages, and naturally connect early-transition actions into their half-court offense.
Transition offense has the highest points per possession (ppp), and the ppp drops every second you wait in the shot clock. That’s why the purpose of this drill is to force a transition possession right away, even after a made basket.

These are the rules.
  1. Do not let the ball bounce after a made or missed basket.
  1. Closest player inbounds immediately. (Diagram shows 4, but anyone can inbound.)
  1. The ball handler should catch the ball on the run. The ball handler does not have to be the point guard. (The diagram shows 1 catching it, but depending on the situation, any ball handler can take it.)
  1. Shooters run the wings to the deep corners.
  1. Bigs rim run. (4 and/or 5)
  1. Ball handler should look to pass ahead before halfcourt.
