1-on-1 Sideline Deny Defense

This is a defense drill focused on deny defense and teaching the offense how to get open with purpose. Run this near the start of practice to raise intensity and get everyone mentally locked in.
Phase 1
11CCC
  1. ‘C’ is the coach, and the coach’s job is to try to complete the pass.
  1. The offense works along the sideline, faking and changing direction to create an angle to receive the ball.
  1. The defense plays tight deny, staying in position. A steal is great, but no gambling or reaching that gives up position.
  1. If the offense catches the pass, they hold the ball and pivot for 4 seconds. During this time, the defense applies heavy hands-up pressure with a wide chest, denying the pass back to the coach.
Phase 2
11CCC
  1. After the offense catches the ball a couple of times (coach decides the number based on intensity and group size), the coach will then pass to the coach on the opposite half of the court.
  1. Both offense and defense sprint to the other side and get right back into the same deny situation.
  1. Repeat Phase 1 on the new side.
Phase 3
2121CCCCCCCC
  1. Once the first group sprints to the other half, a new group steps in.
